[Also in Group VII] In a method of manufacturing bags or like articles of paper or similar material wherein the articles are caused to advance continuously during their manufacture, a stapling device moves at the same speed as the articles to be stapled, and in the same direction, during the stapling operation, after which it is returned to its initial position in readiness to staple the next article to advance. As shown, paper bags 1 with their bottoms folded and glued, advance in the direction B along the line A. The stapling device, which is of known type, comprises a punch 14 which is movable in a guide 10a on a support member 10 and is operated through a pin 13 on a, pinion 12. The punch co-operates with an anvil 5 and wire 33 is supplied from a reel 32. The pinion 12 is rotatably mounted on a shaft 11 on the member 10, the shaft also being supported in a slot 8a in a frame 7 attached to the machine frame 20. The member 10 is further supported by pins 9 in slots 8 in the frame 7. A pair of pinions 16, 17, eccentrically mounted on spindles 20 cooperate with the pinion 12, the pinion 16 being driven through a pinion 34, and the pinion 17 being mounted in a sliding bearing 21. In this way the member 10 is given a reciprocating movement parallel to the line A, a leaf spring 22 co-operating with the bearing' 21 to assist in the return movement. In an alternative arrangement, the pinions co-operating with the pinion 12 are of elliptical shape. A reinforcing cover strip of paper is secured by glue to the stapled bag bottom. |
