The controller (1) has an operating lever (4) which can be moved by the driver to control the gear selection. The operating lever (4) has a permanent magnet at the end. The movement of the operating lever is detected by coils (13,14,15,16) arranged in a square, and the resulting signal used to drive the actuator (3) that drives the gear selectors.
