PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a steel code that can increase the tensile rigidity of the code itself and also attain increase the tensile rigidity of a belt layer by making the distribution of the sharing strength of the rubber between the steel codes (interlaminar rubber) uniform, when the code is used as a reinforcing material for the belt layer. SOLUTION: This steel code 10 is prepared by simply twisting four element wires 12. When the angles between the wire 12 on a short side face Sa and a long side face Sb and the code axis are respectively represented byαandβ, there is the relation of cosecα< cosecβ. As a result, when a tensile load is applied to the steel code 10, the wires on the long side face or the wires on mutually different side faces promptly come into contact with each other to suppress the mutual deviation in their positions whereby the tensile rigidity of the steel codes is increased. In addition, when the steel codes 10 are arranged in parallel with a belt layer, the width of an interlaminar rubber becomes almost uniform and the distribution of the sharing stress acting on the interlaminar rubber becomes constant thereby increasing the tensile rigidity of the belt layer.
