PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst which can produce a controlled conjugated diene polymer at a high activity by compounding a compd. of a group IIIB metal of the periodic table, an ionic compd. of a noncoordinated anion and a cation and an organometallic compd. of a group I to III element of the periodic table. SOLUTION: A compd. (A) of a group IIIB metal of the periodic table (e.g. a carboxylate, alkoxide,β-diketone complex or phosphate of a group IIIB metal of the periodic table), an ionic compd. (B) comprising a noncoordinated anion and a cation [e.g. triphenylcarbenium tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate or N,N- dimethylanilinium tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate] and an organometallic compd. (C) of a group I to III element of the periodic table (e.g. an organoaluminum compd., an organolithium compd. or an organomagnesium compd.) are compounded in a molar ratio of A/B of (1/0.1)-(1/10) and in a molar ratio of A/C of (1/0.1)-81/1,000), thus giving the objective catalyst.
