PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an acrylonitrile-based precursor fiber for a carbon fiber, enabling the production of the carbon fiber having a high quality at a low cost by a shortened sintering process and having high strength and high elastic modulus and high in compactness and orientation degree. SOLUTION: This acrylonitrile-based precursor fiber for a carbon fiber is produced by spinning an acrylonitrile-based copolymer containing 96.0-98.5 wt.% of acrylonitrile as a monomer by a wet type spinning method, and has a tensile strength of >=8.0 g/d, a tensile modulus of elasticity of >=50 g/d, an iodine adsorption of <=0.5 wt.% per weight of the fiber, and a degree of crystal orientationπof >=90% by a wide angle X-ray diffraction method.
