摘要 <p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the discharge of HC to the atmosphere by raising the exhaust gas temperature until a ternary catalyst is activated after desorption of HC is started in a device for desorbing HC from a HC adsorbent and purifying the desorbed HC by the ternary catalyst. SOLUTION: In a cylinder direct injection type internal combustion engine 11 having a ternary catalyst 19 and a HC adsorbing catalyst 20 interposed in an exhaust passage 17, the increase in HC adsorbing quantity of the HC adsorbing catalyst 20 is surely avoided, when the internal combustion engine 1 is started at a low temperature, until HC desorption is started after the starting. When the engine is in idling area or low-load operation area until the ternary catalyst 19 is activated after the desorption of HC from the HC absorbing catalyst 20 is started, the ignition timing is retarded to raise the exhaust gas temperature. Thus, the early activation of the ternary catalyst 19 is promoted while suppressing the increase in HC discharge quantity to the minimum, and the discharge quantity of HC during the period from the engine start to the activation of the ternary catalyst 19 is suppressed to the minimum.</p>
