OBSTACLE DETECTOR AND DETECTING METHOD IN UNDERGROUND PROPELLING WORK

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the workability of propelling work by an arrangement wherein a transmitting/receiving antenna for detecting an obstacle in the soil is incorporated in the forward end part of a propelling body. SOLUTION: A communication transmitting means 181 for transmitting a frequency modulated carrier from a transmitting/receiving antenna is built in the forward end part 66 of a propelling body 64. An electromagnetic wave propagating through the soil from the communication transmitting means 181 is received by a communication receiving means 182 on the ground thus detecting obstacles existing in the vicinity of the forward end part 66 of the propelling body 64. Consequently, the propelling body 64 is advanced straight or curved in the soil thus avoiding collision against an obstacle.
