PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat reflecting coating compsn. which has a deep color and possesses improved heat reflecting properties by incorporating a specified semiconductor powder into a coating. SOLUTION: A coating is compounded with at least one semiconductor powder, with a particle diameter of 0.1 to 100μm, pref. 1 to 20μm, selected from InP, Mn2 O3 , Mn3 O4 , Cu2 O, CuO, MoS2 , CoFe2 O4 , NiFe2 O4 , MnTiO3 , MnCrO4 , ZnCrO4 , and Ge is compounded in an amt. of 3 to 60 wt.% based on the nonvolatile content of the coating and optionally 3 to 30 wt.% metal flake to obtain a coating compsn. having heat reflecting properties. A substrate is coated with this coating compsn. to form a coating which is then dried to obtain a coated product. The coated product can highly reflect a near infrared radiation, by virtue of its energy gap and refractive index, and, despite the deep color of the coating, can reflect the near infrared radiation and absorb visible light. Further, the coating compd., when applied to appliances involving a problem of contamination, can retain the heat reflective properties without cleaning for a long period of time.
