PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a calender capable of enhancing the variation in treatment functions at the calendering finish of a raw material web with a very small expense by making rolls adjustable so as to have at least two open nips between two closed nips. SOLUTION: This calender having plural rolls each having a shaft arranged on one press plane, forming nips between adjacent rolls and having a controlling device for opening or closing the nips, is obtained by making the rolls 2-8 adjustable so as to have at least two open nips 11-13 between two closed nips 10, 14. It is preferable to form the closed nips 10, 14 between two pairs of the outer rolls 3, 4; 7, 8. Also, it is preferable that the two end rolls 3, 8 are constituted as flexible-adjustable rolls. Further, among the outer rolls 3, 4; 7, 8 forming two closed nips 10, 14, at least either one of the rolls is preferably driven.
