PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a paint which can yield a coating having soft suitable metallic surface gloss by incorporating a luster pigment of metal pieces prepd. by grinding a deposited metal film. SOLUTION: A luster pigment is prepd. by grinding a deposited metal film to prepare metal pieces pref. having a thickness of about 100 to 1,000Åand a particle diameter of about 5 to about 100μm. The metal pieces are pref. an aluminum powder. The luster pigment is incorporated in an amt. of pref. not less than 15%, still pref. not less than 50%, particularly pref. not less than 70%, in terms of the wt. concn. of the pigment. Increasing the concn. (by wt.) of the pigment can accelerate the orientation of the plane of the luster pigment, can reduce the glittering gloss, and can impart better metallic surface gloss. Pref., the metallic paint consist essentially of a luster pigment and a solvent (e.g. xylene) and, if necessary, contains a binder resin (e.g. an acrylic resin). The metallic paint is applicable to automobile components, automobile bodies, domestic electric products and the like.
