A method of and an arrangement for obtaining reference information comprising speech parameter data and variability data from test or enrollment speech (2) of an individual. Classes of speakers are defined, each class comprising speech parameter data and variability data of said speech parameter data, obtained from speech of a plurality of speakers. Speech parameter data (3) of the test or enrollment speech (2) are obtained and variability data are allocated to the speech parameter data in accordance with variability data of the class of speakers assigned to the individual. The speech parameter data (3) and allocated variability data comprise the above reference information (5). With the reference information (5) thus obtained an improved method and arrangement for speaker verification is provided.
