The invention relates to a method for effectively reducing the content of residual monomers in an aqueous solution, mixture, melting mass, suspension or dispersion of a polymer by a postpolymerization with the addition of an oxidation-reduction initiator system, a reaction temperature suitable for said initiator system, and a liquid system mixing time which is as short as possible in the production reactor. At least one of the oxidation-reduction initiator components which is necessary for polymerization of the residual monomers is gradually, proportionally, or continuously added during a period of time which is 10 to 250 times greater than the mixing time of the liquid system in the reactor.
