The device has a scanning device (3), such as a camera, which is moved relative to the cable surface, to provide an image of the pattern of the braiding. The scanning device thus enables any non-uniformities in the braiding pattern to be identified. The relative movement may be a rotational movement and a superimposed translational movement along the length of the cable. A signal may be generated representative of the position of the scanning device relative to the cable length.
