The present invention relates to a method for distinguishing between internal and external messages in a system during the transmission of specific messages of "message waiting indication services" in telecommunication networks, particularly in hybrid and specific DECT/ISDN telecommunication networks, and for displaying the useful messages addressed to subscribers in telecommunication systems. To this end, an unit, such as the DECT base station, is used for sending or transmitting the message of a message waiting indication to a terminal, such as the DECT mobile unit, which is allocated and connected to said unit. The DECT base station further transmits an additional indication for precisely distinguishing between internal or external events.
