The spark plug (3) has a central electrode (33), an earth electrode (35), and a bypass electrode of semiconducting material connecting central and earth electrodes, with resistance less than ten thousand ohm/cm. The bypass electrode is located transversely across the spark gap between the central and earth electrodes so that an inductive discharge occurs across the gap after a breakdown occurs over the bypass electrode, if an ignition voltage is applied between the central and earth electrodes. The bypass electrode contains a semiconducting material and is designed to be continuous.
