The Variable Speed Universal Machine (VSUM) is an electrical, AC rotating machine assembly capable of operating as a motor or alternator. The VSUM, operating as a motor, uses a fixed or variable-frequency AC or DC power source to provide a wide range of independently-controllable output speeds and torques which are not directly related to the input frequency or voltage of the power source. Operating as an alternator, the VSUM is driven from any constant or variable speed mechanical source to provide a single-phase or multi-phase AC output at commanded voltages and frequencies which are not related to the input speed of the mechanical source.
