Control system (10) that varies the duration of the interval between successive wipes of a windshield wiper in response to environmental condition. The system is provided with a signal processor (11) having an input for receiving a wiper motor current signal containing information relative to the quantity of current drawn by the windshield wiper and an output for providing a digital wiper signal responsive to the wiper motor current signal. There is additionally provided a processor (12) for computing a summation value corresponding to a summation over time of the current drawn by the windshield wiper during consecutive forward and return cycles thereof and for computing a windshield wiper wipe cycle interval responsive to the summation value.
