A grate construction of a fluidized bed boiler comprising a furnace wherein there is maintained a fluidized bed of solid particles; a windbox (14) in the lower part of the boiler under the furnace; a grate (12) having means (22) for distributing fluidizing air or like gas from the windbox into the furnace; and means (20) for removing bed material, coarse ash and like from the grate. The means for removing bed material from the grate comprise several substantially vertical pockets (20) extending from the grate into the windbox and opening into the furnace, and having, at the grate level, a horizontal cross section in the form of a longitudinal slit and having a downwards tapering vertical cross section parallel with the slits. The pockets divide the grate into sections (401, 402, 403, 404, 405).
