Compounds are pyrolyzed with methanol, at temperatures up to 1200 deg C, preferably 400-1000 deg C. The hydrogen halides produced are determined. An Independent claim is included for the apparatus for the determination, comprising a pyrolysis unit (1) and a halogenide detector (2). Preferred features: The volatile organohalogen compounds are adsorbed in one or more possible ways, e.g. in methanol. They are alternatively blown off from aqueous solutions or high-boiling organic fluids. A gas diffusion stage may separate the volatile organohalogen compounds from aqueous solution, after mixing with a carrier solution. The compounds are thermo-desorbed from solids. To detect them, one or more of the following techniques are used: microcoulometry, flame photometry, chemiluminescence, photometry, amperometry, potentiometery, or semiconductor gas sensors. The apparatus includes an extraction unit (3), a blow off vessel e.g. bubbler, gas diffusion module and thermodesorber.
