4,4-dihydroxy pyrazolin-5-one is new. 4,4-dihydroxy pyrazolin-5-ones of formula (I) are new. In (I): R1 = H, 1-18C alkyl optionally substituted, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, -(CH2)m-O-(CHX)n-Y, -(CH2)p-OR', -(CH2)q-R", naphthyl, thienyl, furyl, pyridyl, piperidyl, a group of any three formulae (a)-(c), phenyl optionally substituted, naphthyl optionally substituted by -SO3H, benzyl optionally substituted by -COOH, -OCH3, or -SO3H, pyridyl, pyrimidinyl, pyrazinyl, triazinyl, benzotriazolyl, benzimidazolyl, thienyl, imidazolyl, thiazolyl, 1,2,4-triazolyl, indazolyl, indolyl, quinolyl, or isoquinolyl; m = 1, 2 or 3; n = 1, 2 or 3; X = H or methyl; Y = methyl, OH, or 1-5C alkoxy; R' = phenyl or naphthyl optionally substituted; p = 1 or 2; q = 1, 2 or 3; R" = optionally substituted phenyl; R2 = H, 1-18C alkyl optionally substituted, phenyl substituted by halogen, nitro or CF3, phenyl substituted by up to three 1-4C alkyl, alkoxy, or dialkylamino groups or 1-2C alkylthio, benzyl optionally substituted, -(CH2)r-R4, methoxy carbonyl, ethoxy carbonyl, phenyl, 1-4C alkoxy, phenoxy optionally substituted by halogens, CF3, acetamido, 1-4C dialkylamino, carboxy, methoxy carbonyl or ethoxy carbonyl, -NH-CO-R5; r = 1, 2 or 3; R4 = -SO3H, 1 or 2C alkylthio, or benzylthio; and R5 = 1-18C alkyl, 3-18C alkenyl thienyl, furyl, pyridyl, pyrazolyl or halogen.
