Pipes are introduced into a drawing installation by a process where: a) the drive chains of the first drawing unit are moved to produce a gap between them; b) tongs located behind the drawing unit are brought into this gap to grip the drawing spike (6) protruding from the drawing ring (7); c) the tongs grip the drawing spike and pull the pipe end through the gap between the drive chains; d) the circulating drive chains are closed to grip the pipe end; e) the tongs are released and pivoted into a position beside the drawing line; f) the pipe is transported to the next drawing unit; g) the drive chains of the next drawing unit are moved to produce a gap between them; h) the subsequent steps are repeated for this and each following drawing unit.
