A cassette seal for sealing the gap between a bore wall and a shaft includes an inner ring fastened to the shaft and having a radially outwardly open groove, an outer ring fastened in the bore and having a flange type radial projection extending into the groove and a sealing lip of polymeric material fastened to the radial projection in the region of the inner circumference. At least the inner ring 19 made of plastically deformable sheet metal. The inner ring is one single part and is provided at both axial ends with radially outwardly directed annular projections made by plastic deformation. The groove is defined in axial direction by mutually opposed axial surfaces of the annular projections. The sealing lip rests against the inner ring in the region of one axial end surface. The outer ring is at both axial ends provided with circumferentially spaced apart spacers of polymeric material which rest against the axial end surfaces in the unused condition of the cassette seal. The cassette seal has a small number of easily assembled parts, which provides for an especially economical manufacture, and has exceptional operating characteristics, since a transport of the sealed-in medium back into the space to be sealed is reliably achieved.
