PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain anα,α'-bis(vinyloxyalkoxy)xylene, which is useful, for example, as coating ink, coating material, adhesive, resist, and make-up material, and does hardly irritate skin. SOLUTION: A compound shown by formula I [(n) is 1-4] [e.g.α,α'-bis(vinyloxyethoxy)-m-xylene] is obtained by reacting a compound shown by formula II (X1 and X2 are each, for example, F, Cl, Br, I) (e.g.α,α'-dihalogeno-o- xylene,α,α'-dihalogeno-m-xylene) with a metal alkoxide shown by formula III (M is an alkali metal) (e.g. sodium vinyloxyethoxide, potassium vinyloxyethoxide) in a non-protonic polar solvent (e.g. dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide), a glyme-based solvent [e.g. 1,2-dimethoxyethane (monoglyme)], or a mixture of both, preferably at 50-200 deg.C for 0.5-5 h.
