PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing the subject compound useful as an intermediate for synthesizing medicines and agrochemicals, in high purity, in high yield, economically and efficiently by treating an optically active 1- substituted phenyl ethanol with a halogenation agent in the presence of a base. SOLUTION: This method is to treat (A) a compound shown by formula I (R' is halogen, a 1-4C (halo) alkyl or a 1-4C (halo) alkoxy; and (n) is 1 to 3) or formula II, in the presence of (B) a base, e.g. a (substituted) pyridine, a tertiary amine or carbonate, with (C) a halogenation agent, e.g. a (substituted) alkyl or a (substituted) aryl sulfonyl halide, thionyl halide or a phosphorus (oxy) halide, in order to produce a compound with reversed steric configuration shown by formula III or IV. |
