PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a trimer useful as a plasticizer for a sealing material, a heating medium, etc., in a high yield, by addingα-methyl styrene (derivative) to an organic solvent containing a Lewis acid. SOLUTION: (B)α-Methylstyrene (derivative) is added to (A) an organic solvent such as a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon, an aromatic hydrocarbon or an ether (derivative) containing a Lewis acid (A1 ) by dripping, etc., to give the objective trimer (e.g. a compound of formula I or a compound of formula II). Preferably the reaction is carried out at -15 to 30 deg.C by using AlCl3 as the component A1 in the molar ratio to the component B of 0.0005-0.1. Consequently, the objective compound can be stably and efficiently obtained in a high yield.
