PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer recording method capable of forming a highly detailed image on image receiving paper low in surface smoothness. SOLUTION: In a thermal transfer recording method, the pre-print ink layer laminated on a base material in the order of an image receiving layer and a surface layer is thermally transferred to image receiving paper preliminarily by the thermal transfer recording method and color ink having an m.p. higher than that of the image receiving paper by 10-30 deg.C is thermally transferred to the image receiving layer of the pre-print ink layer transferred to the image receiving paper under the pressure of 600 g/cm or more of a recording head to form an image.
