PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal head which has a protection film having resistance to corrosion or abrasion and a sufficient durability by preventing crack or peeling of the protection film from occurring even when thermal or mechanical shock is applied and is capable of performing stable and high quality thermal recording for a long time. SOLUTION: This thermal head comprises a heating resistor 84 provided on a substrate 80, electrodes 86 provided to both sides of the heating resistor 84 for supplying power thereto, a lower layer protection film 88 mainly made from ceramics formed at a side of the heating resister 84 as a protection film for protecting the heating resistor 84 and electrodes 86 and an upper layer protection film 90 mainly made from carbon formed on the lower layer protection film 88. A height of a step formed on the surface of the lower layer protection film 88 because of the thickness of the electrode is not greater than 0.2μm.
