A method of treating an animal having a condition associated with the presence of cyanide in quantities sufficient to cause undesirable symptoms which comprises administering to the subject a compound in an amount effective to alleviate the undesirable symptoms, the compound having the structure: <IMAGE> wherein R1 and R1' are the same or different and each is an alkyl group, a phenyl group or a substituted derivative of a phenyl group; R2 and R2' are the same or different and each is hydrogen, an unbranched alkyl group, a halide or a group having the structure R-C- <IMAGE> wherein R is hydrogen, an alkoxide group, and alkyl group or OH; R3 and R3' are the same or different and each is hydrogen or an alkyl group; X and X' are the same or different and each is a water-soluble group having weak to intermediate field strength; and Q- is a soluble, pharmaceutically acceptable negative ion.
