METHOD FOR CUTTING OPTICAL FIBER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cut a plastic optical fiber to a smooth cutting surface with high accuracy. SOLUTION: The plastic optical fiber 1 is nonthermally cut by laser abrasion by using a UV laser beam L1 condensed to a wire shape of a wavelength 190 to 380 nm or by using a UV laser beam L, condensed to a spot form while relatively moving or rotating the plastic optical fiber 1. The simultaneous cutting of a jacket 2 and the plastic optical fiber 1 and further the simultaneous cutting of only the jacket 2 for exposing the end face of the plastic optical fiber 1 therewith are possible as well.
