Has dirt protection screen which is automatically cleaned. The egg inspection system is designed to detect fertile eggs. It uses a lighting system (3), which directs light towards an egg (2) to be examined which is contained in an incubation tray (6), and a light receiver through which the light is gathered after passing through the egg mass. The system is associated with an automatic analyzer (5). The lighting means (3) and the receiver means (4) are arranged in a vertical plane, one under the eggs and the other above the eggs. A protective screen (20) is provided for lighting or receiver system (3,4) which protects against dirt and staining from the eggs (2) or the incubation trays (6). This screen (20) is made from a material designed which does not disturb the luminous flux. Associated with this screen (20) is an automatic cleaning system (25, 26).
