The shank (2) of the implant has a series of centering studs (6) on its outer surface. The studs are of varying thickness, depending on the size of the shank, so that they provide a gap of constant width between the shank and the inner wall of the medullary canal (4) for a constant and homogenous thickness of cement (3). The studs are located on medial (25), posterior (27) and anterior (28) faces of the metaphysis section (20) of the implant, and on the medial (25) and lateral (26) faces of its diaphysis section (23). An additional stud (7) is located at the tip of the shank to give mediolateral or anterior-posterior centering. The studs can be made with stems fitted into blind holes drilled in the shank and made so they shear off when the shank is withdrawn from the canal.
