In the curved rectangular duct of the new device, the cross sectional area QA of the outlet (14) is 1.05-1.35 times larger than the cross sectional area QE of the inlet (12), the radius of curvature of the outer duct wall (RA) changing smoothly to this end; that (RI) of the inner duct wall being constant. Independent claims are included for method and use. In the method, the dirty stream flows at a velocity of 20-30 m/s and is introduced under pressure, or under reduced pressure. In the use, e.g. wood cuttings and paper are separated ahead of a filter plant section.
