POLYMER GEL AND PROCESS FOR THE ACTIVATION OF ACTIVE HYDROGEN COMPOUNDS

Active hydrogen atoms contained in an active hydrogen compound are activated by using as the activation catalyst a polymer gel having a three-dimensional network structure holding a solvent therein and bearing active sites inside the network structure and on the surface thereof. It is preferable that the polymer gel exhibit a swelling ratio of 2 or above and/or have basic functional groups, particularly those resulting from at least one compound selected from the group consisting of tertiary amines, quaternary ammonium salts, cyclic amines and sulfides. The activation of active hydrogen atoms contained in an active hydrogen compound is suitably conducted under such conditions that the quantity of basic active sites of the gel per unit volume of the reaction system is 0.43 mmol/cc or above.
