The on-board unit's security case (8), column-mounted (3), encloses the steering lock (10,11) and is connected by secure circuits (21) to the engine management unit (22) and central locking controller (23). A microprocessor (6), with EEPROM memory (9), verifies coded identifying signals from a signal generator (17) housed e.g. in the driver's key (5) opening door locks and permitting driving away. The security case, e.g. of injection molded alloy, riveted or bolted, is openable only with extreme force. Bidirectional communication with the key in the telecontrol mode is by infrared or radio emitters and receivers (12,15;13,16), the user having one or more activating buttons (18) on the key, whose controlling microprocessors (17) is cell-powered (19). Opt., key functions are exercised by a smart card. Mechanical correspondence is required when inserting the key in the lock, and intercommunication for authentication is then provided by inductive coupling coils in each, involving no power source in the key. Immobilizing is achieved electronically in the management unit (22), or, opt., by electromechanical means, e.g. fuel-line shutoff valve, etc.
