Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) controllers containing as the active ingredient compounds represented by general formula (I), salts of the same, or hydrates of both (wherein each symbol is as defined in the description). The compounds exhibit control effects against PPAR and are therefore useful as, e.g., antihyperglycemic drugs, antihyperlipidemic drugs, or preventive and/or therapeutic agents for metabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, syndrome X, hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipo-proteinemia; hyperlipemia, arteriosclerosis, circulatory diseases, polyphagy, and ischemic heart diseases.
