Synthetic antigens which comprise hydrophobic and hydrophilic components are provided for inducing CD1-restricted (T) cell-responses in mammals. Further provided are methods for using these antigens and compositions which are combinations of CD1-recognized synthetic antigens, additional antigens, adjuvants and other substances that induce immune responses.
