A gas turbine engine airfoil construction having an improved blade construction embodying a member shaped as an airfoil. The airfoil construction utilizing dissimilar materials cooperatively and unconventionally arranged reduces thermally caused stresses and improves the airfoil strength and durability characteristics. The airfoil construction includes a first and second annular metal stator rim. The stator rims, positioned in parallel, include a plurality of ceramic blades therebetween, each ceramic blade having a rounded nose and a flattened and tapered tail. Each ceramic blade further includes an opening for receiving a metallic tensioning pin. The metallic tensioning pin mounts between the first and second annular stator rims, clamping and containing the ceramic airfoil therebetween in a position relative to the axis of the turbine engine. The gas turbine engine airfoil construction provides an improved, high temperature airfoil construction with enhanced strength and durability. |
