摘要 The invention provides a relative measure of the following characters of process waters or effluents: total dissolved solids, inorganic dissolved solids, organic dissolved solids, colloidal pitch and inorganic colloids. Total dissolved solids (TDS) may be estimated by an empirical mathematical relationship using a combination of UV absorbance and conductivity measurements of microfiltered (filtration <1 micron) water. The relative inorganic and organic portions of the TDS are determined as a mathe matical relationship with conductivity and UV. The total amount of colloidal material is determined by the absorbance in the visible region in a sample filtered in the 5 -100 region. The relative amount of colloidal pitch is determined by measurement of t he UV-visible absorbance at two or more temperatures with the pitch concentration b eing linear with the temperature dependence of the turbidity, absorbance or transmission. A mathematical relationship between the UV measurements at different wavelengths provides an additional measure of the relative portion of pitch colloids. The me asurement provides a means for controlling colloidal and dissolved solids in water.
