The lighting unit has a light source (10), e.g. a light bulb or a fluorescent light tube, a reflector (12) and a diffuser disc (14), positioned infront of the partially transparent reflector and provided with 2 sets of spaced diffuser plates (16,18) lying in different planes relative to the light incidence direction and overlapping at the central reflector.
