Optical recording/pickup head compatible with compact disk-recordable (CD-R) and digital versatile disk (DVD) using polarization beam splitter

An optical recording/pickup head compatible with a CD-R and a DVD transfers a first light beam of 650nm wavelength for a DVD and a second light beam having a wavelength of 780nm for a CD-R which are respectively emitted from a first light source (1) and a second light source (40A) to an objective lens (7) using first and second beam splitters (33, 32) having polarized light beam splitting characteristics which are varied according to a wavelength. The objective lens (7) focuses the transferred first and second light beams on the information recording surfaces (8, 9) of a CD-R and a DVD. The first and second light beams reflected from the information recording surfaces (8, 9) of the CD-R and the DVD are transferred to first and second photodetectors (39, 40B) by the first and second beam splitters (33, 32), respectively. The first and second photodetectors (39, 40B) detect information from the first and second light beams incident from the first and second beam splitters (33, 32), respectively.
