Coding system

A coding system which includes an encoder (4) for coding an input signal (12) into a coded signal (16) and a frame memory (1) for outputting a predictive (14, 15) signal. The system further comprises a coding controller (41) responsive to the input signal and the predictive signal, for calculating a characteristic of the input signal and for generating a coding control signal (42) for controlling the encoder based on the characteristic.
