PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the range of materials to be used for an optical recording medium and to provide an optical recording medium showing proper recording conditions and high SN and high stability with large changes in absorption characteristics for light. SOLUTION: This optical recording medium has an optical recording layer 3 dispersing fine particles 32 of a recording material in a mother material 31. The recording material consists of a substance showing metal-insulator transition by stress. Recording is executed by raising the temp. of the layer by irradiation of light and then rapidly cooling to develop residual stress which induces transition of the fine particles of the recording material into a metal. Reproducing is performed by detecting changes in the plasma resonance absorption accompanying changes in the electron state of the fine particles of the recording material. Erasing is done by raising the temp. of the layer by irradiation of light and then slowly cooling decrease the residual stress and to induce transition of the fine particles of the recording material into an insulator. |
