PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization compensating optical system capable of compensating the retardation with high accuracy. SOLUTION: In an optical system having a polarization compensating optical system, the polarization compensating optical system is composed of a half wavelength plate 22, a first optical system 23a composed of refractive surfaces 26, 27 in which one and more surfaces are not coated and a second optical system 23b composed of refractive surfaces 24, 25 in which one and more surfaces are coated, the total sum of rotating amounts and the total sum of retardation amounts of polarizing surfaces generated in the light beams passing through a whole optical system become almost zero by the rotation of polarizing surface generated by the first optical system 23a and the retardation generated by the second optical system 23b. |
