PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wearproof working roll for a multistage rolling mill, and a surfacing method for the roll. SOLUTION: A working roll for a multistage rolling mill has an embossed basis material surface at its barrel, in which the centerline average height Ra is 0.5μm to 10μm and the average inclinationβof projections expressed below is 6 deg. or more. The embossed surface is chromium-plated, which chromium plate layer is then surface-polished. The average inclinationβis represented as:β=Σ[tan<-1> (ΔY/ΔX)]/N, whereΔY is the absolute value (μm) of the difference in height between two points on the surface in the roughness measuring direction,ΔX is the distance (2μm) between these points in the roughness measuring distance, and N is 6,250 or theΔY measured value between two points apart from each other by a measured length of 12.5 mm.
