摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve display image quality by controlling the pretilt angle of a liquid crystal layer to such a range that when a voltage near the threshold voltage is applied on the liquid crystal to display a medium tone, inversion of gradation is not caused in the direction out of the viewing angle. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal cell 16 is a unit comprising a liquid crystal display element 1, optical phase difference plates 2, 3 and polarizing plates 4, 5. Orienting films 11, 14 have two regions of different states from each other. In the liquid crystal layer 8 and are controlled in such a manner that a first division 8a and a second division 8b facing to the two regions have different orientation states of liquid crystal molecules from each other. When a pretilt angle is defined as the angle between the major axis of the liquid crystal molecule and the orienting film 14 (11), the pretilt angle on the liquid crystal layer 8 is controlled to such a range that when a voltage near the threshold voltage of the liquid crystal is applied to produce a medium tone display state, inversion of gradation is not caused in the direction out of the viewing angle. Thereby, not only the compensation function for phase difference but decrease in the contrast ratio in the direction out of the viewing angle and inversion in the horizontal direction can be improved.
