System and method for intelligent admixture and delivery of medications

An automated medication infusion device receives prescription information including information pertaining to a medication prescribed for a patient. The prescribed medication checked using information in one or more databases to determine whether it is appropriate to administer said prescribed medication to said patient. If it is inappropriate to administer the medication, a clinician is alerted. The databases checked can include patient databases and pharmaceutical databases.
