PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent occurrence of foaming and cracking by curing a starting material containing thermosetting resin to a specific rubber hardness, then vacuuming, further curing and carbonizing by firing. SOLUTION: Furan resin, phenol resin, amino resin, epoxy resin unsaturated polyester resin, alkyd resin or xylene resin is used as the thermosetting resin and the furan resin, particularly at its initial condensate is preferably used. As starting substances, a curing agent is added to the thermosetting resin in an amount of 0.001-20 wt.%, when necessary, a solvent is added and they are mixed by stirring. The resultant starting material is cured at 30-100 deg.C under normal pressure for 1-70 hours until its hardness retuches 8-75, preferably 30-60. Then, the resin is exposed to vacuum of 0.001-3 Torr, for 5 hours to 1 month, and treated at 20-200 deg.C for 3-30 days to continue the curing. Finally, the treated product is carbonized by firing in an inert atmosphere at 800-3,000 deg.C, particularly 1,100-2,800 deg.C to product the objective glassy carbon with the maximum closed pore diameter of 100 μm and a density of >=1,500/m<3> . |
