PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the reliability of initialization to uniformly electrify the whole of a screen, by applying a lighting maintaining voltage between a first and second main electrodes prior to uniformizing electrification distribution and generating a surface discharge with previous lighting cell. SOLUTION: In a stage after a pause period of TH, not less than one sustaining pulse Ps having a pulse height of lighting maintaining voltage Vs is applied prior to the application of voltage pulse Pr. An object electrode of application is set so as to utilize a remaining wall charge for discharge. The sustaining pulse Ps has a positive polarity, the last application in a sustaining period TS is executed to a sustaining electrode Y, and thus to a sustaining electrode X application is executed. In order to fit an electrification polarity to a voltage pulse Pr, application is made to the sustaining electrode Y. In this case, two sustaining pulses Ps in all are applied, and the surface discharge by a voltage pulse Pr becomes the third discharge after a pause period TH. An amount of electrification reduced through the pause period TH is restored to a level of finish of sustainment by a preliminary secondary surface discharge. |
