摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a memory type bistable liquid crystal display device using flickerless high-duty chiral nematic liquid crystals. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device A is constituted by disposing scanning electrode members 4 successively formed with scanning electrodes 2 and alignment layers 3 on a transparent substrate 1 and signal electrode members 7 successively formed with signal electrodes 7 and alignment layers 8 on a transparent substrate 6 so as to face each other via the chiral nematic liquid crystals 10 in such a manner that the scanning electrodes 2 and the signal electrodes 7 intersect with each other to form square pixel regions 9. The chiral nematic liquid crystals 10 are formed so as to have a twisted structure in an initial state and to have two quasi-stable states different from the initial state by impressing the voltage to give rise to Frederick's transition to the initial state. Further, the max. height (Rmax ) of the surface roughness of the oriented layers 3, 8 is specified to 0.05 to 0.2μm.
