<p>An interactive method and system are disclosed for supporting and facilitating note-taking tasks in a variety of settings, primarily, though not exclusively, in real time. In one embodiment, the system user uses a stylus device and display to enter notes in the form of handwritten strokes that are stored and correlated with an address, such as a time provided by a system clock. The system user must specify the request of an address from the system, and in this manner, the specification of an address such as time is entirely under the system user's control. Notes are collected in a data structure represented by a spatial region on the display called an address. or time, zone that is created when the user enters a gesture requesting an address from the system. All notes entered in a particular time zone region in the display area are stored in a portion of the data structure correlated with the time associated with that time zone region, and, while time zones are created in sequential time order, notes can be entered in time zones in any sequence. An additional feature is provided for designating a portion of the user's notes as an information designator. A common example of an information designator is a key word, but the information designator function is designed for any task requiring the identification, tracking, and retrieval of specific information contained in the notes. In one embodiment, the method and system avoid recognition of the strokes entered and designated as an information designator by assigning a unique, system-recognizable identifier to each information designator so as to facilitate later access to time values via the unique identifier. An information designator data structure stores both the strokes and the unique identifier of an information designator. A well-designed user interface provides workspaces for creating and using time zones and for easily displaying and using information designators.</p> |
